Robert Griffing (born 1940) is a Pennsylvania-born painter celebrated for his exquisitely detailed, historically grounded portraits of Eastern Woodland Native Americans from the 18th century. Growing up in Linesville near Lake Pymatuning, he developed an early fascination with Indigenous cultures through collecting stone artifacts and sketching artifacts around the lake bed .

Griffing studied illustration at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and built a thirty-year career in commercial advertising. In 1991, he returned to his lifelong passion for Native history, dedicating himself to fine art. His realistic, photo-like oil paintings, meticulously researched and often using Native American historians and reenactors as models, capture pivotal moments such as councils at Fort Pitt and the impact of European presence on tribal life.

Highly regarded in both art and history circles, Griffing has earned multiple honors, including repeated features in U.S. Art Magazine (Top 25 selling artists, 1994) and awards from the Eiteljorg Museum, Autry Museum, and more. His works grace national museum exhibitions, prestigious gallery circuits, and educational publications aimed at unearthing Eastern Woodland heritage
