Visions of the American West - Where the West Lives on in Paint and Story

Join us as we open our summer exhibition celebrating the legacy of the American West through the eyes of some of its most iconic interpreters. Visions of the American West brings together a collection of works by artists who were drawn by the West's light, cultural history, and rugged beauty.

With strong Cincinnati ties through artists like Henry Farny, Joseph Henry Sharp, William Meuttman, Joseph Scheuerle, Victor Casenelli and John Hauser, this exhibition invites viewers to consider Cincinnati's role in shaping the narrative. From vivid portraits to sweeping, sunlit vistas, each painting reveals something about the history, culture or natural beauty of the West.

Artists such as Oscar Berninghaus, Elbridge Burbank, Nicolai Fechin, Bill Freeman, and George Phippen offer portrayals of the landscapes, wildlife, people, and moments that defined the frontier and continue to shape our national identity.

In recent decades, artists like Michael Coleman, Caleb Meyer, John Paul Strain, Gary Niblett, and David Mensing have continued the tradition, creating paintings that celebrate the landscape or blend historical accuracy with cinematic storytelling.

Whether you're a longtime admirer of Western art or discovering it for the first time, this exhibition invites you to experience one of America’s richest artistic legacies.

Cincinnati Art Galleries is part of the 2024 FotoFocus Biennial: backstories. The FotoFocus Biennial, now in its seventh iteration, activates over 100 projects at museums, galleries, universities, and public spaces across Greater Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Northern Kentucky in October 2024. Each Biennial is structured around a unifying theme; the 2024 theme, backstories, focuses on stories that are not evident at first glance.

FotoFocus welcomes global artists, curators, critics, educators, and visitors to Cincinnati with exhibitions, talks, performances, screenings, and panel discussions during its Opening Program Weekend, September 26–September 28, 2024.

The 2024 FotoFocus Biennial theme, backstories, focuses on stories that are not evident at first glance. They offer context for what happened previously or out of view, providing narratives not yet told or presented from a new perspective. Once told, they shed light on current circumstances and events. Backstories fill in where the evidence ends, adding nuance, solving mysteries, or simply telling us something we need to know.

To some extent, all histories are backstories. Histories emanating from archives, discovered through reporting, or revealed through gossip provide essential contexts for understanding a given photograph. Similarly, series of photographs have built-in backstories, offering greater context for those singular images we tend to valorize as “telling the whole story.”

In all these instances, what is visible on the surface—what is easily photographed—is enlarged and enriched through an understanding of broader histories, by seeing beyond what is evident, by knowing the backstories.

Exhibition will run September 26th through November 2nd, 2024.
